Participation in the Somos Hermanos program changed my view of the world in many ways and in many more that are still not apparent to me. However, my experience as a participant solidified my desire to work in global health. The program gave me a solid base of Spanish to enter my position as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ecuador and later complete a master's in public health. The Somos Hermanos program changed the way I view much of the world, and how intricately connected we are.  It is a wonderful program and I recommend it to anyone who has a sense of adventure, loves learning, medicine and a person who has a desire to learn more about the world and themselves. This program will change you.

Both the 5-Month and 3-Month Immersion Programs are open to anyone post undergraduate degree in the U.S. or Canada entering the health care profession (i.e. medical, nursing, therapist, dental, pharmacy, physician assistant, public health, etc), entering the legal profession, social services, or education professions.

Due to the time commitment of our programs, students typically participate in their gap year following the completion of their undergraduate degrees and before entering into a graduate program. Most students begin interacting with clients, students and patients as soon as their first year of graduate school and can both utilize and improve upon their language skills and cultural competency.

In addition, Somos Hermanos does accept individuals who are currently enrolled in, or have recently completed a related graduate program. The average age of participants is 21-25 years old, and 15% of our participants are between the ages of 25 to 30.

WHICH SESSION SHOULD I APPLY TO?

Time commitment will likely be your deciding factor; the 5 month program includes a month of volunteering/shadowing while the 3-month program is ideal for those who have less time to commit and are still looking for an immersion experience.

Some applicants believe that spring is better because of the medical school application process, however, our fall participants have been accepted to and attended the same amount of medical schools as our spring applicants, so in practice our participants would say this is false.

Many medical schools are very flexible with scheduling! Some fall participants fly home for interviews, negotiating with schools to have near consecutive interviews, and many others have been able to push back interviews until November or January, after the program has ended.

Some people think that interviewing in certain months is better than interviewing in other months, however schools don't change their criteria mid-way through the cycle, they are always looking for the same kind of applicant and will not simply fill spaces because, they want great applicants and will wait to find them.
